In the heart of the lower Eastern region of Kenya, Machakos County is making strides towards becoming a premier sports hub and an economic powerhouse. Governor Wavinya Ndeti's administration has announced plans to establish homegrown county soccer leagues, including Division 2 clubs, as part of its agenda to promote sports as a major plank of economic transformation.

The announcement was made during the launch of the third annual Governor's Cup tournament in Mumbuni North Ward. This tournament, a magnet for scouts from top clubs in Kenya and abroad, has been instrumental in unearthing talent in the region. Approximately 650 teams have been lined up to participate this year.

The county government is continuing to work towards providing opportunities for the youth in sports and economic transformation. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF), supported by FIFA through FIFA Forward funding, has committed to the establishment of a Football Technical Centre in Machakos County. This centre, to be established at the New Machakos City following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FIFA two years ago, will be a sh 600 million facility.

The new football technical centre is part of the dream of a professional career in football for Machakos' young stars. The new government-supported leagues will absorb the massive talent pool from the Governor's Cup tournament, providing a structured pathway for players to develop their skills and gain exposure. These leagues will also provide a permanent home for thousands of young players unearthed by the Governor's Cup tournament over the past three years.

If successful, Machakos could become the first county in the lower Eastern region to establish such leagues. Governor Wavinya Ndeti sees this initiative as a crucial step in positioning Machakos as a premier sports tourism hub. The county is not just nurturing talent but building a foundation for a sporting and economic revolution.

The Machakos County government is finalizing a sustainable mechanism to support county leagues and regional Division 2 clubs. This move is expected to boost the growth of football in the county and provide a platform for local talent to shine.

One such talent is Felix Mwendwa, a player from the 2023 champions Kaluluini FC, who has been offered a scouting opportunity in Spain. The success stories like Felix's are a testament to the potential that lies in Machakos' youth.

In conclusion, Machakos County's ambitious plans for a sporting and economic revolution are well underway. With the establishment of the football technical centre, the creation of homegrown leagues, and the continued support for local talent, the county is poised to become a beacon of sports and economic development in Kenya.
