County of Herford's 2025 local elections: contest for the position of county councillor

In the recent district council elections held in Herford, Germany, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) emerged as the strongest factions, each winning 15 seats. The CDU received 29.76 percent of the votes (33,518 votes), and the SPD received 29.64 percent of the votes (33,381 votes).

The Green Party won 4 seats with 8.98 percent of the votes (10,108 votes), while The Left, AfD, FDP, UWG-Kreis, The Party, and Volt won 3, 9, 2, 1, 1, and 0 seats, respectively. The Left secured 5.19 percent of the votes (5,842 votes), the AfD received 18.06 percent (20,338 votes), the FDP got 3.28 percent (3,692 votes), UWG-Kreis garnered 2.86 percent (3,216 votes), The Party earned 1.95 percent (2,194 votes), and Volt managed 0.29 percent (326 votes).

The elections for the district administrator saw no candidate receive more than 50 percent of the votes, resulting in a runoff election on September 28 between Mirco Schmidt (CDU) and Frank Diembeck (SPD / B 90/The Greens). Mirco Schmidt received 43.59 percent of the votes (47,446 votes), and Frank Diembeck received 40.58 percent (44,162 votes).

Voters will cast their ballots at the same polling station where they voted on September 14. Polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on September 28. Voters will need to present their voter notification or personal ID to vote.

Postal voting in person for the runoff election can only be done starting from September 18. Voters who want postal voting for the runoff election can apply starting from September 15, but no new voter notifications will be sent out for the runoff election.

It's worth noting that the district of Rhein-Sieg-Kreis will hold a runoff election for the office of district administrator (Landrat) between Sebastian Schuster (CDU) and Sara Zorlu (SPD) on the same date, September 28, 2025. Additionally, Siegen-Wittgenstein is holding a runoff election for its district administrator on the same date, and the Neuss district has a runoff for Landrat between Hakan Temel (SPD) and a CDU candidate.

Voter turnout for the elections was 57.39 percent, with a total of 114,000 valid votes cast in the elections for the district administrator, district council, mayoral, and city or municipal council.
