Country Mood Needs a Shift, Says Linnemann
CDU Leader Calls for Welfare, Migration, and Government Reforms
In a bold move, Carsten Linnemann, the General Secretary of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has proposed a series of reforms aimed at tackling pressing issues facing the nation. Linnemann's demands come amidst the first months of the black-red coalition and a shift in the national mood.
Linnemann's welfare reform proposals focus on prioritizing employment over bureaucratic procedures. He advocates for cutting welfare support for those persistently unwilling to work, and for addressing cases of misuse, such as fictitious rentals and undeclared work. He also calls for stricter measures to prevent the transfer of child benefits abroad.
Regarding migration and integration, Linnemann is concerned about the number of people who have arrived in Germany since 2015, with less than half currently employed. He insists on policies to prevent illegal migration into welfare systems and to boost regulated labor migration.
In government reform debates, Linnemann has expressed dissatisfaction with the coalition's achievements so far. He believes that the success of forthcoming reforms will determine the political viability, particularly concerning the welfare state.
On civil service staffing, Linnemann objects to indiscriminate civil servant appointments, citing fiscal burdens on pension liabilities and statutory insurance contributions. He urges restraint in new appointments, limiting them to core sovereign functions.
Linnemann's demands reflect a focus on tightening welfare policies, improving labor market integration, controlling migration effects on social systems, and fiscal restraint in government staffing. As the CDU General Secretary, he is currently struggling with the mood in the country and is seeking reasons for the current state.
With these reforms, Linnemann aims to address the challenges facing Germany and to restore public confidence in the government's ability to address these issues effectively. The upcoming "autumn of reforms" will be crucial in assessing the government's reform capacity and the CDU's role in shaping the nation's future.
