Tensions Easing at Thailand-Cambodia Disputed Border

Countries Thailand and Cambodia engage in negotiations to de-escalate intensifying border disagreement

A shift in events is brewing along the contested border of Thailand and Cambodia following a lethal skirmish in May, which resulted in the loss of a Cambodian soldier's life. In a bid to lessen the tension, both nations are making preparations to relocate their troops to their initial positions. The announcement was made on Sunday, with Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan of Thailand initiating the news and Cambodia following suit shortly after.

To date, neither country had publicly disclosed the extent to which they had fortified their military presence in the border area. The intention behind this symmetric withdrawal is to foster a more tranquil ambiance, as per statements from both nations.

The shared borderline stretching over 817 kilometers, across seven Thai provinces, is home to 17 officially recognized border crossings between these two neighbors. This territorial boundary has been a bone of contention for over a century now, with both nations disputing sovereignty over unmarked regions. The boundary was initially demarcated by France in 1907, during a time when Cambodia was under French colonial rule.

Cambodia, in recent times, has expressed its intention to escalate the dispute to the International Court of Justice. Given the intricate and prolonged nature of the issue, it appears increasingly likely that bilateral talks might not be enough to steer towards a definitive resolution. Thailand, on the other hand, rejects the court's jurisdiction and insists on resolving all border-related issues through direct discussions.

A previous escalation occurred in 2008, centered around a centuries-old Hindu temple, resulting in numerous casualties among both nations. Tensions have been on the rise since then, with both countries standing firm on their territorial claims while seeking dialogue simultaneously.
