Indo-Pak Ceasefire: A US-Mediated Effort to Ease Tensions
Countries India and Pakistan announce truce; leaders weigh in on the decision.
After days of border skirmishes and rising tensions in response to the bloody Pahalgam terror attack, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full-blown ceasefire following negotiations brokered by the United States.
In a Twitter post, Donald Trump, the former US president, announced the agreement, expressing his pleasure at India and Pakistan's common sense and intelligence. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, was instrumental in the talks, engaging with top Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, and their respective national security advisors.
"We commend Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace," Rubio said in a statement. Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, confirmed the development, stating, "Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect."
The ceasefire builds upon India's swift counter-terror operation, Operation Sindoor, which targeted the insurgent group behind the Pahalgam attack. According to defence sources, the operation resulted in the neutralization of several high-value targets in just 72 hours.
Welcoming the agreement, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the importance of immediate aid for those affected by the conflict, while the Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav expressed support for peace in the region.
International observers urge sustained dialogue, trust-building measures, and a shared commitment to combating terrorism for long-term peace between the two nuclear powers.
