Countries India and Pakistan agree on a truce; reactions from their leaders follow.

Following days of back-and-forth skirmishes and increased tension, India and Pakistan have reached a consensus on a complete and immediate truce, thanks to US mediation. This decision comes on the heels of an appalling terror attack in Pahalgam which left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead.

The Announcement

In a post on his Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump hinted, "After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed details of the negotiations, stating, "After 48 hours of fruitful discussions with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, I am thrilled to share that the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to engage in conversations on a wide range of topics at a neutral venue."

Furthermore, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the truce, asserting, "Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always endeavored for peace and stability in the region, without compromising its sovereignty or territorial integrity."

The Ground Reaction

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his take, "India and Pakistan have mutually agreed upon a halt in firing and military activities. We've consistently upheld a strict and resolute stance against terrorism in all its forms. This commitment remains steadfast."

The truce was met with guarded optimism in Jammu and Kashmir. The region's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chimed in, "I welcome this ceasefire. Unfortunately, if implemented sooner, perhaps some lives lost wouldn't have been. Pakistan's DGMO contacted India's DGMO, and the ceasefire was enforced. It's now the duty of the current J&K administration to assess ongoing damages and provide assistance to affected citizens."

Sustained Dialogue for a Lasting Peace

As both nations tread on the path of peace, international observers underscored the importance of continued dialogue, confidence-building measures, and a firm commitment to battling terrorism to secure lasting harmony between the two nuclear nations.

Meanwhile, travel booking platform Ixigo temporarily halted bookings to Turkey, Azerbaijan, and China amid escalating tensions. As hopes for sustained peace grow, it remains to be seen whether this agreement will mark the beginning of a new era of diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan.
