Supports the country's defense against Iran's "terrorist government" - Countermeasure against Iran's Labeled Regime: Classified as Terrorist

The Chief of Staff of the Chancellery, Thorsten Frei, has backed the support voiced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz for Israel's attacks on Iran's alleged "terror regime." In an interview with the German Press Agency, Frei stated that Israel's actions to prevent a nuclear armed Iran are in Germany's interest.

It's not just about nuclear weapons, as Frei emphasized. "Even Iran's rocket technology permits medium-range rockets to reach distant targets, potentially in Europe," he said. Given these capabilities, Germany can no longer act as if the situation in Iran doesn't concern it.

During the G7 summit in Canada, Merz had praised Israel's strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and leadership personnel, using the term "dirty work" to describe the Israeli actions. Afterward, he faced criticism for his choice of words and support for the attacks.

Frei declared that it is premature to assess whether Israel's actions fall within international law. "We simply lack the necessary information to make a definitive legal assessment," he noted. However, Israel took action due to its perceived threat from Iran, which has declared its intent to destroy Israel.

Key Insights:

Experts debate the legality of Israel's military strikes, with some scholars justifying them as self-defense under international law, while others view them as a violation of the United Nations Charter as they were not authorized by the UN Security Council. Some analysts also express concern about the erosion of international law norms due to alleged Western support for Israel's strikes.

Germany, like other countries, has mainly responded by urging restraint and stressing diplomatic solutions, while emphasizing the importance of adherence to international law in resolving the crisis.

CDU leader Merz had also spoken about Israel's attacks as "dirty work" that benefits everyone. He received backlash for his phrasing and support of the attacks, but Frei defended him, stating that Germany remains committed to supporting Israel's ability to defend itself.

Further Information:

  • Efforts to engage in diplomatic solutions to resolve the Iran nuclear issue have been ongoing for years without a concrete resolution.
  • Israel has a historical record of responding aggressively to perceived threats from its neighboring countries, citing self-defense as its rationale.
  • Critics argue that Israel's attacks on Iran risk exacerbating regional tensions and potentially sparking a wider conflict.
  • Some experts assert that Iran's nuclear program remains a significant threat to international peace and stability, especially if the country achieves nuclear weapons capability.
