Stands firm on actions against Iran's 'terrorist government' independently - Countering Tehran's Alleged "Terrorist Government" without Costs

Germany's Chief of Staff of the Chancellery, Thorsten Frei, has backed the sentiments expressed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz in support of Israel's military actions against Iran. Frei explained, "International interest lies in preventing a terror regime like the Iranian Mullah regime from possessing nuclear weapons," during an interview with the German Press Agency.

It's not just about nuclear weapons, though. According to Frei, "Even Iran's rocket technology is such that medium-range missiles can hit far-reaching targets, including those in Europe. We cannot afford to be complacent about this."

At the G7 summit in Canada, Merz commented on Israel's strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and leadership personnel, stating, "It's the dirty work that Israel is carrying out for us all." However, it's worth noting that the term "dirty work" was used by the reporter in her question, and Merz echoed her sentiment in his response. Merz expressed "deep respect" for Israel's courage in executing these actions. His statements were met with criticism, ranging from questionable choice of words to support for the attacks.

Frei clarified that a legal assessment of the attacks is not yet possible due to a lack of crucial information. "Regardless, it's indisputable that Israel acted due to imminent threats. Iran's political goal is to destroy Israel," Frei stated.

Frei asserted that Germany remains committed to ensuring Israel's capacity for self-defense, even in the wake of Israel's attacks on Iran. "The federal government has and will continue to feel committed to this in the future," Frei shared with the German Press Agency.

Historically, Germany has approved the delivery of weapons and military equipment to Israel, despite the region's turbulent state. While Ukraine is currently the only exception, Germany has continued to allow military exports to Israel, with figures reaching around four million euros in the first five weeks of the current government's term, according to the Ministry of Economics. This figure is significantly lower compared to the first quarter of 2025, during which the red-green minority government approved military deliveries valued at 28 million euros to Israel.

Frei noted, however, that this comparison is not meaningful as one would need to analyze larger time periods to understand potential strategies in play. "The stance towards Israel has not shifted through the federal government," he added.
