Countdown to the upcoming election: preparations initiated, volunteers sought for electoral duties

The state of Berlin is gearing up for its parliamentary elections, scheduled to take place on September 20, 2026. The state electoral officer, Stephan Bröchler, has begun preparations and is ready for up to three referendums to be held alongside the elections.

However, the coordination of the referendums and the exact number that will be held are yet to be determined. The state electoral officer is currently in discussions with printers regarding the number of ballot papers required, including potential additional ballot papers for referendums.

Meetings with districts are scheduled over the next few weeks to determine the number of polling stations needed. If multiple referendums are held, the number of polling stations and polling assistants may need to be increased to prevent long queues on polling day. Approximately 40,000 election workers will be needed for the Berlin elections.

The question of polling assistants also needs to be clarified. Those who have helped in past elections and agreed to their data being stored are usually contacted directly. All interested parties, including first-time voters, are encouraged to declare their willingness to work as election assistants as early as possible.

In other news, preparations are underway for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new centre for gene and cell therapy. No further details about the ceremony have been provided at this time.

Berliners aged 16 and 17 with German citizenship will be able to vote for the first time in a parliamentary election. Additionally, a World War II bomb has been defused in Mitte, and another is scheduled to be defused in Spandau on Friday.

One year until the election, preparations are in full swing, and election helpers are still being sought. Interested parties are encouraged to declare their willingness to work as election assistants as early as possible.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Berlin state parliament elections and the potential referendums.
