Councilwoman from Cudahy expresses sorrow over a satirical video she shared, which encouraged local street gangs to mobilize against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In the city of Cudahy, California, Vice Mayor Cynthia Gonzalez has found herself at the centre of a heated controversy following a TikTok video she posted, which appeared to call on local gang members to respond to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

The video, now deleted, depicted Gonzalez questioning why members of gangs like the 18th Street Gang and Florencia 13, notorious for their violent history, were not defending their turf against what she referred to as "the biggest gang there is," which was interpreted as a reference to ICE. The video sparked immediate backlash, with many deeming it irresponsible and dangerous.

Brian Heyman, a resident of Downey, criticised the video as "completely irresponsible" for suggesting that any members of a gang should go after members of ICE. The Department of Homeland Security also responded strongly, labelling Gonzalez's comments as "despicable" and linking them to a significant increase in assaults on ICE officers.

Gonzalez, however, has since apologised for the video, stating that it took attention away from the pain communities are experiencing and brought unnecessary attention to Cudahy. In a statement, her attorney, Damian J. Martinez, clarified that Gonzalez in no way encouraged anyone to engage in violence. Instead, she was challenging the Latino community to join thousands of Angelenos organising against ongoing immigration enforcement operations.

The City of Cudahy has distanced itself from Gonzalez's comments, indicating they do not represent the city's official position. Meanwhile, L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis has announced her intention to introduce a motion to explore the county's legal options against unconstitutional immigration enforcement actions.

The video was made on Gonzalez's personal social media account during her own time. It's unclear when the video was made, but it emerged and spread on social media after a Fox News reporter said it had triggered a federal probe into the politician. The FBI, however, has neither confirmed nor denied that Gonzalez is under investigation, per agency policy.

Several speakers condemned the video during a City Council meeting, with one stating that it "really does" represent the city of Cudahy. The L.A. County Sheriff's Department, meanwhile, has started transferring inmates from its jails to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the first time in years, a move that further fuels the ongoing immigration debate in the region.
