Council urges decision on the approval of the directive, according to the Commission's proposal.
The CDU parliamentary group in Saarland is embarking on a strategic mission to shape the economic future of the region, both domestically and internationally. Led by Fraktionschef Stephan Toscani, the delegation will travel to Brussels for two-day talks on May 21st and 22nd.
The purpose of the trip is clear: Saarland has lagged economically in recent years, finishing last in both GDP and employment growth nationwide last year. Toscani emphasises the need for urgent action, stating, "We must therefore urgently move forward."
The delegation includes Dagmar Heib, First Vice-President of the State Parliament, Jutta Schmitt-Lang, Alwin Theobald, and Anja Wagner-Scheid, the deputy parliamentary group leaders. Raphael Schäfer, Parliamentary Business Manager, will also be part of the team. All three are experienced CDU politicians with key roles in foreign, transport, and economic policy committees.
The talks in Brussels aim to generate impulses for a change of course in economic policy, both in Saarland and in cooperation with European institutions. Economic and industrial policy will be the key topics of the discussions.
High-ranking counterparts in Brussels include Sabine Weyand, head of the General Directorate for Trade and Economic Security of the EU Commission, and Dr. Jan Grünhage, deputy permanent representative of Germany to NATO.
Meetings at the European Parliament are scheduled with Daniel Caspary MdEP, David McAllister MdEP, and Jens Gieseke MdEP. The aim of the talks is to represent the interests of Saarland at the European level and exert early influence on relevant decisions.
Toscani emphasises the importance of advocating for a policy change in economic policy in Saarland while closely monitoring decisions in Berlin and Brussels. The most important decisions during the talks on May 21 and 22 in Brussels concerning the Saarland's economic and industrial sector involve strengthening the business location in Germany through improved tax incentives, such as the reintroduction of a 30% declining balance depreciation for movable assets.
Additionally, there is a focus on providing favorable financing and equity capital for small and medium enterprises to enhance growth and succession, facilitated by programs like the ERP Economic Plan Act 2026. These decisions aim to support industrial competitiveness and economic growth in regions like Saarland.
Moreover, the discussions will address measures to boost investment and innovation, including support for digitalization and future technologies. The CDU delegation is actively shaping the economic future of Saarland, including beyond its borders, as part of their strategic efforts. Friedrich von Heusinger, head of the Brussels liaison office of the Economic Council, will also be part of the meetings.
