Council of Jews expresses concerns over gaps in regulations against hateful expressions

The Central Council of Jews in Germany, a prominent organization and key representative of the Jewish community, has expressed concern over the increasing number of hate messages directed towards them. According to Josef Schuster, the President of the Central Council, German criminal law does not currently permit action against many of these messages.

Recently, seven new hate messages were published, sent directly to the Central Council, but none could be reported to the police due to the current legal loopholes. This situation is a disgrace, as Jews are being incited at demonstrations and on the internet.

In response, the German cabinet has agreed on an amendment to the criminal code. This amendment will create a new criminal offense of inciting insults, which will hold those who incite against Jews accountable by the courts.

Federal Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht (SPD) has announced that she will implement this amendment promptly. The government is taking strong action against anti-Semitism, also significantly increasing investigative pressure against inciters and extremists.

Minister Lambrecht stated that the government will not tolerate the incitement against Jews. The Central Council of Jews in Germany has expressed their criticism to "Bild am Sonntag," a German newspaper, regarding this issue.

Currently, the Central Council of Jews in Germany is receiving approximately 50 hate messages per day. The organization has criticized the current state of German criminal law regarding hate messages, highlighting that it only penalizes insults against individuals, not against institutions.

The new criminal offense will address this gap in the law, providing a much-needed tool for the authorities to combat hate speech effectively. The government's action is a step towards ensuring a safer environment for all citizens, regardless of their religion or ethnicity.
