Council nominee, Ladoja holds meeting with Olubadan council prior to coronation ceremony
In a significant development, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan-designate of Ibadanland, has expressed his intention to engage key stakeholders to expedite the enthronement process.
Addressing supporters at his private residence on Ondo Street in Ibadan, Oba Ladoja revealed his plans to the media on Monday. He expressed hope that his meeting with the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oluwo, the Araba, and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, would facilitate a swift resolution to the process.
The Olubadan stool, one of the most prestigious in Yorubaland, has a unique historical evolution and a distinct, age-based selection process. The Olubadan's succession is not hereditary but progresses through a hierarchical system of chieftaincy titles, divided into the Balogun and Otun lines.
Oba Ladoja's ascension to the Olubadan throne was accelerated due to the death of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. Ladoja, who returned to his ancestral hometown of Ibadan, expressed sadness over the loss but noted that it had expedited his ascension to the throne sooner than he anticipated.
On August 4-5, 2025, the Olubadan-in-Council nominated Oba Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland during a meeting at the Olubadan’s Palace. His nomination was quickly communicated and forwarded to the Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, for approval. The selection was praised for its timely and mature handling by the council, maintaining the traditional system's integrity.
Oba Ladoja, a former Governor of Oyo State, began his journey towards the Olubadan stool in 1993 from his family compound. Upon his return to Ibadan, he visited his family at Arusa Compound, Isale Osi.
On Tuesday, Oba Ladoja held a meeting with members of the Olubadan-in-Council. He then received well-wishers at his Bodija residence. All members of the Olubadan-in-Council were in attendance at the meeting.
Oba Ladoja's reign is anticipated to usher in peace and development in Ibadan according to prominent local figures. The Olubadan of Ibadanland is the traditional ruler of Ibadanland, with a unique historical evolution and a distinct, age-based selection process. This system ensures a peaceful and orderly succession, reducing the dynastic disputes common in other monarchies.
Oba Ladoja expressed gratitude to God for his continued life and expressed hope that the governor will not delay in assenting to his enthronement. The Olubadan-in-Council, a council of kingmakers composed of the highest-ranking chiefs, oversees the selection process. When the Olubadan stool is vacant, the council nominates the most senior chief eligible for the throne, and the nomination is then forwarded to the state government for formal approval.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, with its rich history and distinctive selection process, continues to be a beacon of tradition and order in Yorubaland.
