Saarland's CDU parliamentary group is embarking on a two-day trip to Brussels, from May 21 to 22, with the aim of shaping the economic future of the region and advocating for change in its economy.

Led by Fraktionschef Stephan Toscani, the delegation includes key members such as Dagmar Heib, First Deputy President of the state parliament, Raphael Schäfer, Parliamentary Business Manager, and the deputy parliamentary group leaders Jutta Schmitt-Lang, Alwin Theobald, and Anja Wagner-Scheid.

The focus of the talks will be on economic and industrial policy, with the goal of generating impulses for a change in economic policy, both in Saarland and in cooperation with European institutions. Toscani emphasizes the importance of advocating for a change in economic policy in Saarland, while closely monitoring decision-making processes in Berlin and Brussels.

Saarland has significantly lagged economically in recent years, and urgent action is needed to catch up, Toscani notes. The talks aim to represent the interests of Saarland at the European level and exert early influence on relevant decisions.

During the meetings, the delegation will engage with high-ranking counterparts, including Sabine Weyand, head of the General Directorate for Trade and Economic Security of the EU Commission, and Dr. Jan Grünhage, deputy permanent representative of Germany to NATO.

The key measures and projects discussed between the CDU parliamentary group of Saarland and the European institutions in Brussels in May 2023 will focus on promoting the economic development of Saarland through enhanced cooperation on EU funding programs, support for regional innovation and industrial transformation, and strengthening cross-border economic ties within the European framework. The deliberations aim to leverage EU structural funds and investment programs to boost Saarland's competitiveness and sustainable growth.

In addition to the meetings at the European Parliament, the delegation will also meet with MEPs Daniel Caspary, David McAllister, and Jens Gieseke. All three MEPs are experienced CDU politicians with key roles in foreign, transport, and economic policy committees.

The Brussels trip is part of the strategic efforts of the CDU parliamentary group to extend beyond the state's borders and ensure that Saarland's industry-driven economy receives the right framework conditions for a good future, with a focus on technological openness, affordable energy, and reliable structural policy. The discussions in Brussels are expected to provide valuable insights and opportunities for Saarland's economic growth and development.
