Council district sees leadership shakeup with Moritz Meister appointed as new deputy
In the District of Lüneburg, a significant change has taken place in the local administration. On September 18, 2025, Moritz Meister, a 33-year-old resident of Lüneburg, was elected as the new deputy district administrator. Moritz Meister, who is studying environmental and educational sciences at Leuphana University, has been a member of the District Council since 2021, representing the Alliance 90/Greens faction. His political focus areas are climate protection and climate adaptation in the district of Lüneburg. The election was necessitated by the resignation of Ingo Goetz from the District Council. Goetz, who previously served as the deputy district administrator, also stepped down as the chairman of the supervisory board of the Lüneburg Theater. Jens Bother, the District Administrator, thanked Goetz for his commitment, particularly in the field of cultural politics. To fill the vacancy in the District Council, Felicia Theissen, also a member of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, was sworn in during the council meeting at the Ritterakademie in Lüneburg on September 18, 2025. Theisen succeeds Ingo Götz in the council. Barbara Freudenthal, a member of the Greens faction, had originally entered the District Council via the SPD list. Her resignation was confirmed by the District Council. To replace Freudenthal, Egbert Bolmerg of the SPD will take her place in the District Council. This change in the District Council and the appointment of Moritz Meister as the new deputy district administrator mark a new chapter in the political landscape of Lüneburg. The focus on climate protection and adaptation is expected to guide the district's development in the coming years.
