Could Gout Gout of Australia be the next Usain Bolt in the sprinting world?
New Aussie Sprint Phenom Making Aussie Bolt Comparisons
Is Gout Gout the Next Usain Bolt? Comparisons with the Jamaican icon often crop up in the world of junior athletics, but seldom do they materialize. But young Gout Gout, at just 17 years old, might just be different.
Originally from Ipswich, Queensland, born to South Sudanese immigrants, Gout Gout has been a phenomenon in the sprinting realm. His electrifying speed and calm, composed style are eerily reminiscent of Bolt. And he's more than just style - he's delivering results.
In his European debut at the Ostrava Golden Spike this week, Gout Gout churned out an astounding 20.02s in the 200m - the 11th fastest time of the entire year. This not only shattered his personal best and Australian record, but it also marked his first professional race outside of Australian soil.
The world first took notice of Gout Gout last August, as he clocked a 20.60s run at the Under-20 World Championships in Lima. This earned him the silver medal and a contract with Adidas.
At only 16, Gout Gout ran a blistering 20.04s to win the 200m at the national high school championships, breaking a 56-year-old record set by 1968 Olympic silver medallist Peter Norman.
His 100m potential was on full display in April when he twice ran under 10 seconds at the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth. Although the wind assistance nullified both times, his speed was undeniable.
The real test comes in September at the Tokyo World Championships, where Gout Gout will face off against luminaries such as world champion Noah Lyles and Olympic medallist Letsile Tebogo. That clash promises to be exhilarating!
