Could $100 in Bitcoin Today Turn Into Millions by 2045?

A $100 investment in Bitcoin today would buy a tiny fraction of the cryptocurrency—about 0.00116 coins at current prices. Yet, if bold predictions from Bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor come true, that same $100 could grow into millions over the next two decades. The digital currency’s wild price swings, however, highlight the risks of such forecasts.

Bitcoin’s price currently sits near $86,000 per coin. At this level, $100 would secure roughly 0.00116 BTC, ignoring any trading fees. The cryptocurrency’s volatility was on full display recently when its value jumped by $200 in mere seconds.

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy and a well-known Bitcoin bull, has made striking long-term predictions. His most optimistic scenario sees Bitcoin hitting $49 million per coin by 2045. Under this forecast, a $100 investment today could balloon to around $57,000, delivering a 37.3% annual return over 20 years. Even his lower target of $13 million per coin would turn that $100 into $15,115, assuming Bitcoin trades at $30,000 in 2025.

A more conservative estimate of $3 million per Bitcoin by 2045 would still yield $3,485 from a $100 stake, equivalent to a 19.4% yearly growth rate. Yet when accounting for inflation, the real value of a $13 million windfall in 2045 would shrink to about $9,370 in today’s money—a 9,270% return.

Saylor’s boldest claim suggests Bitcoin could replace all global gold reserves, valuing the cryptocurrency at $1.0 quadrillion. Most analysts consider this scenario improbable.

While some investors, including the author, plan to hold Bitcoin and related assets for the long term, Saylor’s most ambitious targets remain controversial. The gap between his projections and current market realities underscores both the potential and the uncertainty of cryptocurrency investments. For now, Bitcoin’s future value stays speculative, with outcomes ranging from modest gains to life-changing returns.
