Cottbus Expects Thousands of Revelers for Its Carnival Parade - Cottbus Moves Its Legendary Carnival Parade to Honor a Dark Chapter
Cottbus will host its 33rd annual carnival parade, the Parade of Happy People, on February 8, 2025. This year's event has been rescheduled a week earlier than usual to honour the 81st anniversary of a tragic bombing in the city's history. Organisers expect over 3,000 participants and thousands of spectators to line the streets for one of eastern Germany's largest celebrations.
The parade is traditionally held on the Sunday before Rose Monday, a key date in Germany's carnival season. However, in 2025, the event has been moved forward by seven days. The change follows the city's decision to mark the anniversary of the February 15, 1945, bombing by the U.S. Army Air Forces, which resulted in many civilian deaths.
Last year's parade drew around 30,000 visitors, making it one of the biggest carnival events in the region. This time, the festivities will kick off at 1:11 p.m., with floats, costumes, and music filling the streets. Cottbus has a long tradition of hosting lively carnival celebrations, and the Parade of Happy People remains a highlight for locals and tourists alike.
The earlier date ensures the city can both celebrate its vibrant carnival culture and reflect on its past. With a record number of participants and crowds anticipated, the 2025 parade will once again bring colour and energy to Cottbus. The event also serves as a reminder of the city's resilience over the decades.
