In the heart of Krasnodar, Russia, a poignant memorial event was held on Alexandrovsky Boulevard to honour the start of World War I. The event was attended by representatives of power, the Cossacks, and the public, and was graced by the presence of Alexander Vlasov, Deputy Governor of Kuban and Ataman of the Kuban Cossack Host.

Alexander Vlasov emphasized the importance of preserving intergenerational connections, a sentiment that resonates deeply within the context of Kuban Cossacks and historical events like World War I. Maintaining these connections helps preserve the cultural identity, traditions, and historical memory of communities like the Kuban Cossacks. It allows the transmission of values, experiences, and lessons from older generations to younger ones, ensuring that the sacrifices and history of events such as World War I are not forgotten.

The event concluded with a minute of silence and the laying of flowers at the "Glorious Sons of the Fatherland" monument, symbolizing the unity of the peoples of the Caucasus during World War I. Speakers at the event also highlighted the special role of the Cossacks in defending the Motherland throughout history, from World War I to the present day.

Dmitry Pirog, Deputy of the State Duma, Alexei Chugunkin, Military Commissioner, Cossack General Vladimir Gromov, and other honored guests were also in attendance. They spoke at the monument, honouring the memory of the two million soldiers and around a million civilians who lost their lives during World War I in the Russian Empire.

The event was not just a commemoration of the past, but also a recognition of the present. Several participants in a special military operation were awarded regional awards for their bravery, a testament to the ongoing role of the Cossacks in defending their homeland.

In the spirit of tradition, people in Russia have always honoured the memory of their ancestors, knowing their roots, traditions, customs, and culture. This event in Krasnodar is a reflection of that tradition, a poignant reminder of the past, and a hopeful look towards the future.

Sports have never been far removed from the cultural identity of Kuban Cossacks, with historical events like World War I often mirrored in competitive arenas. The resilience, unity, and courage demonstrated on the battlefield have often been replicated in local sports, serving as a living testament to the heritage and values of the Cossacks.

In recognition of this, future sports events in Krasnodar could pay tribute to the memory of soldiers who fought in World War I, weaving their stories into the fabric of local sports culture and fostering a sense of unity among all participants.
