Cosmic Spectacle: Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight

The Perseid meteor shower, a celestial spectacle that lights up the night sky annually from late July to late August, is a much-anticipated event for stargazers. In 2022, the peak of the shower occurred on the night from August 13 to 14.

According to DWD forecasts, the night from August 13 to 14 would have been clear across Germany, with no rain or clouds expected. However, the almost full moon would have been a disturbing factor, as its bright light could have reduced visibility.

The best viewing conditions would have been a clear, cloudless sky during the early morning hours between about 2:00 and 4:00 AM. Observers were advised to find dark locations away from city lights with a wide view of the horizon, ideally with the radiant point in the northeast part of the sky visible.

The Perseid meteor shower originates from the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which returns to our region every 133 years on its orbit. Each individual meteor in the shower is a dust particle that hits the Earth at relatively high speeds, around 30 to 35 kilometers per second. The trail of these dust particles is what the Earth runs through each year during the Perseid meteor shower.

At the peak of the shower, up to 60 meteors per hour can be observed. Viewing between 2 AM and 4 AM would have offered the best meteor rates, as the Earth rotates so the radiant is higher in the sky then. Seeking out dark, open fields or rural areas far from urban light pollution would have been beneficial. For example, places like Gülpe in Westhavelland Nature Park were suggested as very dark spots in Germany, ideal for meteor observation.

Positioning oneself so the bright moonlight (if present) is blocked by natural or manmade objects to avoid glare, and looking away from the moon to enhance faint meteor visibility were also recommended. Lying on your back and gazing about 45° to 90° away from the radiant point, rather than directly at it, would have helped catch longer meteor trails.

In summary, the best conditions for the Perseid meteor viewing experience in Germany in 2022 would have been a dark rural location with clear skies, observing between 2 and 4 AM on August 13–14, and avoiding looking directly at the moon if it was visible. Despite the bright moon, the clear skies would have offered a good opportunity to witness this annual celestial event.

  • The combination of clear skies and minimal light pollution would have made for an ideal viewing experience for the Perseid meteor shower, as science and space-and-astronomy enthusiasts looked forward to this celestial display.
  • Despite the potential interference from the bright moon, observing weather forecasts indicated a distinct absence of clouds or rain throughout Germany, providing an opportunity to observe up to 60 meteors per hour during the early morning hours of August 13–14.
