Recent investigations into corruption within municipalities run by Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), have exposed a network of alleged corruption with significant political implications.

The scope of the investigations has implicated several mayors from key CHP-run municipalities, particularly in southern Turkey and major cities. The probes reveal a pattern of alleged corruption linked to municipal tenders, bribery, and electoral campaign financing.

In Antalya, Mayor Muhittin Böcek was formally arrested on charges of bribery. The investigation uncovered activities in the bank accounts of his son and a businessman, as well as a report by the Financial Crimes Investigation Board. Zeydan Karalar, Mayor of Adana, is under legal proceedings, with his detention linked to the Istanbul investigation. Abdurrahman Tutdere, Mayor of Adıyaman, is similarly involved in the Istanbul-led investigations and was detained.

In addition, Tunc Soyer, the former CHP mayor of Izmir, was detained along with over 100 municipal officials in Izmir as part of a crackdown on corruption related to rigged tenders and fraud. Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was arrested earlier in March on similar corruption allegations.

The investigations in southern cities like Adana, Antalya, and Adıyaman are partially linked to the corruption probes centered in Istanbul. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office is leading multiple investigations into bribery networks involving public tenders, some reportedly coordinated by a figure named Aziz İhsan Aktaş.

The government has stated that investigations are launched regardless of the party affiliation of municipalities. However, many perceive the legal actions as politically motivated. The detained mayors and party officials have denied wrongdoing, asserting that the charges are unfounded and politically driven.

In summary, corruption investigations in CHP-run municipalities have ensnared several high-profile mayors, including those of Antalya, Adana, Adıyaman, Izmir, and Istanbul, with evidence pointing to a network of illicit activities involving public tenders and campaign financing connected through investigations centered in Istanbul. The cases of Karalar and Tutdere are linked to three separate corruption investigations based in Istanbul.

  1. The mayors of key CHP-run municipalities, such as Antalya, Adana, Adıyaman, Izmir, and even Istanbul, have been implicated in corruption investigations, with links to a broader network of activities involving public tenders and electoral campaign financing, primarily stemming from the investigations in Istanbul.
  2. The intricate web of alleged corruption uncovered in CHP-run municipalities has extended even to the banking and business sectors, with the bank accounts of individuals like Mayor Muhittin Böcek's son and a businessman under scrutiny, as well as reports from the Financial Crimes Investigation Board.
  3. The political fallout from these investigations has led to a general-news frenzy and raised questions about the integrity of the political system, with many perceiving the legal actions as politically motivated, while the detained mayors and party officials vehemently deny any wrongdoing and assert that the charges are politically driven.
