News Article: Tonalestate 2023 Focuses on Poverty and Unity
The Tonalestate International Summer University, an esteemed institution dedicated to contemporary music and cultural exchange, is gearing up for its 26th edition with a renewed focus on addressing urgent issues of our time. This year's event, themed "DeRelicti - Who holds the keys to the kingdom?", aims to bring together young people from various countries to foster creative exchange and collaborative solutions.
The dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, has called upon the participants to take personal responsibility in aiding those in need. Emphasising the interconnectedness of human lives, he urged young people to strive for unity fraternally to build the common good, recalling Pope Leo XIV's emphasis on commitment to peace and unity of the Church.
The theme of poverty is central to this year's Tonalestate. Electta Paola Leoni, director of the Tonalestate Study Center, discussed the "possessive anxiety" that leads to conflicts around the world. Vatican media president Elena Lanzoni explained that the Tonalestate aims to focus on those who don't have a voice and live in situations of injustice.
Emanuele Ferrari, a teacher and mayor, echoed these sentiments, calling for listening and a focus on hospitality, commitment, and gift in politics. Gian Guido Folloni, a journalist and former minister, highlighted the alarming fact that there are 56 ongoing wars in the world, underscoring the need for immediate action.
The Tonalestate program includes workshops, lectures, concerts, and masterclasses designed to foster creative exchange among emerging and established artists in the field of contemporary music. The goal for the young people at Tonalestate is to create a fair and humane world where the discarded are fewer.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin emphasised the importance of focusing on innocents affected by the greed and ambition of those in power. In a poignant moment, Cardinal Re administered the sacrament of Confirmation to five boys of the Nazareth Opera during a Eucharistic celebration at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Ponte di Legno.
The Tonalestate is organised by the Tonalestate Foundation and promoted by a cultural association, animated by the Opera of Nazareth.
