Cordoba's Mosque-Cathedral welcomes visitors a day post the fire incident
The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, a UNESCO World Heritage monument and a significant tourist attraction, experienced a fire last Friday. The blaze caused localized damage affecting about 50 to 60 square meters of the vast interior, primarily in the Almanzor nave where the fire originated, and the chapel roof collapsed due to the flames and water used to extinguish the fire.
Two adjoining chapels sustained collateral smoke damage to altarpieces and artworks. However, thanks to the swift response of firefighters, the building was able to reopen to the public on Saturday, with the damaged area cordoned off to visitors.
Preliminary reports suggest that the suspected cause of the fire was a mechanical sweeping machine or electric vacuum cleaner that caught fire, possibly due to a short circuit. Investigations are still ongoing, but this explanation is currently the leading hypothesis.
The Mosque-Cathedral, originally built as a mosque between the 8th and 10th centuries and later converted into a cathedral, remains largely intact despite the blaze. Unlike many other mosques in Spain, the Mosque of Córdoba retained many Muslim details, making it a unique architectural jewel.
The Mosque-Cathedral's management stored cleaning and audiovisual materials in the chapel, which could have been the origin of the disaster. The mayor speculated that the fire might have started due to a battery or an electrical contact. However, the damage caused is considered "very localized," according to the mayor.
More than two million people visit the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba each year, making it a popular destination for tourists. Despite the recent fire, the Mosque-Cathedral continues to stand as a testament to the rich history and cultural diversity of Spain.
