Raw Silver Slag Heist at Copper Manufacturer Aurubis: Conviction Upheld by BGH

- Copper producer Aurubis' multi-million dollar heist: decision against the culprit

Let's talk shop about the latest scoop in the industrial world: the million-dollar heist at Aurubis, a well-known copper manufacturer.

Six crafty perpetrators were handed prison sentences ranging from a cool two years to just shy of six years, with one sentence bizarrely being suspended. Moreover, each of these cunning con artists was ordered to cough up some cash, with the amounts varying from a moderate two mil to a whopping 5.8 million euros. Three of the schemers, feeling a bit unlucky, decided to take their cases to the big league - the BGH in Karlsruhe - after the Hamburg verdict.

However, it turned out to be a losing bet for two of the masterminds. The BGH, with a shake of its prestigious ol' head, dismissed their appeals. One reduction in the amount to be paid back came about, though - from an eye-popping 5.8 mil to a still hefty 2.3 million euros. This reduction was due to the evidence only revealing that this sum was directly linked to the devious deeds.

Aurubis, smelling something fishy, alerted the authorities in June 2024. Investigators from the prosecution office and the police descended upon former and present employees of Aurubis, plus external firms working on the premises. Over several months, nearly five tons of valuable raw silver slag were pilfered - containing silver and gold residues produced during metal recycling processes. The precious metals inside could have raked in around ten million euros on the open market. Instead, the sneaky swindlers scored a mere fraction of that loot.

The February 2024 Hamburg verdict became official with the BGH's decision in July. The regional court even started another trial in July, focusing on a menacing one-million-dollar fraud against Aurubis.
