In a shocking turn of events, former NFL player LeShon Johnson has been convicted of operating a large-scale dogfighting and dog trafficking operation in Oklahoma. The conviction stems from Johnson's "Mal Kant Kennels" operation, which bred and trafficked pit bull-type dogs bred for fighting across multiple towns in Oklahoma.

The authorities seized a total of 190 dogs from Johnson's properties in Broken Arrow and Haskell, Oklahoma, in October 2024. This marked the largest number of animals ever seized in a federal dogfighting case from a single individual.

Johnson, 54, from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, had a prior state conviction for dogfighting in 2005. During his NFL career, which spanned from 1994 to 1999, he played for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Giants.

The federal prosecution resulted in Johnson's conviction on six felony counts, each carrying a potential penalty of up to five years in prison and fines up to $250,000 per count. His sentencing is pending.

Investigators uncovered equipment used to train dogs for fighting, including treadmills, bite sticks, steroids, and detailed records of fights and breeding activity. Some of the transactions involved out-of-state and international buyers. Financial records showed over $400,000 in sales over a period of four years.

The investigation revealed that Johnson's operation was responsible for one of the largest dogfighting cases ever prosecuted in the U.S. Johnson profited financially by selling stud rights and offspring of champion fighting dogs, helping to expand the illegal dogfighting industry nationwide.

Law enforcement officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel, have emphasized a crackdown on organized animal fighting and cruelty through this high-profile case. The consequences of Johnson's actions serve as a stark reminder of the cruelty and illegal activities that can occur behind closed doors.
