Conviction of a Previously Notorious Tough Guy From the Past

In a recent court hearing in Bochum, a well-known hooligan, Thomas D., was sentenced to a one-year probationary sentence for his role in a violent incident that occurred during the football match between Bochum and Cologne in 2023.

The court heard that Thomas D. was accused of helping an arrested man escape by kicking him, an offence also mentioned in the indictment. However, he was not found guilty of aiding and abetting an escape.

The violence of hooligans during the match was not motivated by football but was about "causing trouble," according to the court. The police described the violence as unusually severe, with the presiding judge emphasising that such riots damaged football.

Surveillance videos showed the incident barely, according to the court. Despite this, Thomas D. was convicted for assault. The defense criticised the indictment, but the presiding judge trivialized the violence of hooligans less, instead focusing on the damage such riots cause to the sport.

Thomas D.'s previous conviction was considered during sentencing. It is worth noting that he is a former Cologne hooligan, known for his involvement in the violent clashes between Bochum and Köln in 2023.

The judge emphasised that such incidents are detrimental to the sport and that the sentencing is a reminder that such behaviour will not be tolerated. The case serves as a warning to other hooligans that their actions have consequences and can impact the enjoyment of the sport for everyone.
