Convicting a former navy sailor for planning an attack on Naval Station Great Lakes and central Chicago
In a significant development, Xuanyu Harry Pang, a naturalized citizen originally from China, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for plotting to attack Naval Station Great Lakes and downtown Chicago.
Pang, a former Navy sailor, was arrested by the FBI in 2022, stopping the potential catastrophe at Naval Station Great Lakes and plotted attacks on Chicago's Michigan Avenue. The terror plot was allegedly in response to the death of Qasem Soleimani, a commander of the IRGC Quds Force who was killed by the U.S. military in 2020.
During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Pang communicated with an undercover FBI employee and an unnamed individual, referred to as "Individual A", through encrypted messages about possible targets for the attack. Pang provided images of Michigan Avenue and Naval Station Great Lakes as potential attack sites, stating, "You guys are looking for max damage, right?"
Pang also expressed his intent to travel to Wisconsin to buy automatic weapons and obtained military uniforms for potential attackers to use to gain access to the Great Lakes Naval Station base. He planned to obtain radioactive polonium and provided a cell phone he believed could be used as a detonator in what may have been a plan to create a dirty bomb.
Pang surveilled Naval Station Great Lakes as a new recruit, as well as Michigan Avenue, Chicago-area train stations, among other locations, as part of his terror plot. The FBI used a confidential source and a covert FBI employee posing as an affiliate of the Quds Force to stop Pang's terror plot.
In an encrypted messaging app exchange, Pang requested to be paid in Bitcoin because of safety concerns about carrying cash in Chicago. Pang pleaded guilty to conspiring and attempting to willfully injure and destroy national defense material, national defense premises, and national defense utilities.
However, no further information was given about the current status of the investigation or any potential charges against "Individual A". No specific details about the nature of the terror attacks were provided in the article. It is important to note that there is no publicly available information about the birth date or place of origin of Pang.
