Convicted Wisconsin resident found guilty in the UK for an unsuccessful assassination attempt
Aimee Betro, a 44-year-old woman from Wisconsin, has been found guilty of conspiracy to murder in a family revenge plot in England. The plot, arranged by father and son, Mohammed Aslam and Mohammed Nazir, from Derbyshire, took place in Birmingham on September 7, 2019.
Betro traveled to the UK in August 2019, disguised in a niqab and waiting outside her victim's house in a Mercedes purchased that day. She attempted to shoot her victim, Sikander Ali, at point-blank range, but her gun jammed, allowing the victim to escape unscathed due to sheer luck.
The dispute that led to the revenge plot was a fight with the owner of a clothing store in Birmingham in 2018. Betro, who had formed a criminal partnership online with Nazir, orchestrated the plot with her co-conspirator, involving sending illegal ammunition to a man in Derby, England, as part of the family feud.
Betro also fired shots at Ali's family home before fleeing back to the United States. After the failed assassination attempt, she sent taunting messages from a burner phone to the victim's father. Her capture was secured by forensic evidence. DNA from a black glove found in her abandoned getaway car and from items in the framing packages linked her conclusively to the crimes.
Nazir joined Betro in the US, and together they planned another revenge attack against the same man from Derby. Betro sent illegal ammunition and firearm components under a false identity in an attempt to frame this man, with Nazir tipping off police to implicate him before Nazir's own role was uncovered.
Mohammed Aslam and Mohammed Nazir were jailed for their role in the murder plot last year. Nazir was sentenced to 32 years in prison while Aslam landed 10 years. Betro will be sentenced on Thursday, August 21. She was arrested in Armenia in 2024 and extradited to the UK, where she was convicted of conspiracy to murder in August 2025.
