Former NFL Running Back LeShon Johnson Convicted on Six Counts of Federal Dogfighting Charges

Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson has been convicted on six felony counts related to federal dogfighting charges, with each count carrying a maximum potential sentence of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The conviction comes after Johnson was found guilty of running a large-scale dogfighting and trafficking operation in Oklahoma known as Mal Kant Kennels.

The case involved the seizure of 190 dogs, the largest number ever seized from a single individual in a federal dogfighting case. Johnson has a prior state conviction for dogfighting dating back to 2004, which may influence sentencing.

FBI Director Kash Patel responded to the verdict, stating that the FBI will not tolerate the despicable crime of dogfighting. United States Attorney General Pam Bondi also reacted, stating that Johnson will face severe consequences for his vile crimes. At this time, no final sentence or fine has been announced publicly; sentencing is pending.

Johnson, who is 54 years old, had a successful career in professional football. He was a standout Heisman Trophy candidate in 1993 and was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft. He went on to play for the Arizona Cardinals and the XFL, though no prior context was provided regarding his play in the XFL. Johnson's career total in pro football includes 253 carries, 955 rushing yards, and five touchdowns.

However, Johnson's career was marred by health issues, which led to a hiatus in 1998. A photo provided is of Johnson playing for the New York Giants in 1999. The dogfighting operation was uncovered in Oklahoma earlier this year.
