Neo-Nazi Group Founder Brandon Russell Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison
Brandon Russell, the founder of a Florida-based neo-Nazi group, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for conspiring to plan an attack on Maryland's power grid.
The sentencing, which took place earlier this year, followed Russell's conviction by a jury. His co-conspirator, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, had already been sentenced to 18 years in prison.
The conspiracy was in furtherance of shared racist beliefs, according to prosecutors. Evidence presented during the trial detailed Russell's longstanding affiliation with white supremacist causes and his recent efforts to organize sniper attacks on electrical substations around Baltimore.
Police found a stash of highly explosive materials and a cache of neo-Nazi signs, posters, books, and flags in Russell's house in 2017. This discovery occurred outside a Tampa apartment building where a double homicide had occurred.
U.S. District Judge James Bredar excoriated Russell for his reprehensible views. He imposed the maximum sentence allowed and ordered lifetime supervised release with electronic monitoring. The judge also recommended mental health treatment during Russell's time in prison.
Russell's mother wrote a letter to the court, expressing her belief that he's been trying to fill the void left by a largely absent father and speaking about challenges that arose after moving back to the Bahamas.
Russell's attorney argued that Clendaniel posed a greater threat because she was taking steps to obtain a firearm and shoot up electrical substations. However, the judge did not find this to be a mitigating factor in Russell's case.
It is unclear from the available information what Russell's previous legal history or past convictions may have been. What is known is that Russell pleaded guilty to possession of an unregistered destructive device and improper storage of explosives in 2017.
Russell declined to address the judge directly during the hearing. His attorney mentioned his supportive family and longstanding mental health challenges as factors in his descent into Nazism.
