Chukwudi Okonkwo Goodness, Lagos Businessman, Slapped with 74-Year Sentence for Gargantuan Financial Crime
Convicted Man Sentenced to 74 Years for Embezzlement and Bounced Checks Scandal in Lagos, Worth ₦360 Million
After nine long years of courtroom dramas, Justice Josephine Oyefeso, presiding over a Lagos High Court in Ajah, handed down a 74-year imprisonment sentence to Chukwudi Okonkwo Goodness. The Lagos businessman was found guilty of a colossal financial crime.
This saga commenced on June 6, 2016, when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Goodness, following allegations of fraudulent activities.
During the trial, Goodness stood his ground, pleading not guilty on all 33 counts. The prosecutor, T.J. Banjo, backed by four witnesses and a host of exhibits, managed to prove the EFCC's case beyond a reasonable doubt. Goodness was, however, acquitted on one count involving false documents [1][4].
The crime in question was the fraudulent conversion of ₦360 million belonging to Henry Nnadike between June and July 2015 [1][4]. Goodness was convicted on 32 counts, including 30 counts for issuing dud cheques and two counts related to stealing and other financial misconduct.
Punishment and Restitution
- Punishment: The court sentenced Goodness to seven years for stealing, seven years on count 33, and two years each on the 30 counts related to issuing dud cheques. All sentences run concurrently, totalling a 74-year imprisonment sentence without the option of a fine for the dud cheque counts [1][4].
- Restitution: The court ordered Goodness to repay ₦215 million to the victim within 30 days of the judgment, with the possibility of a fine thereafter.
This case underscores the severity of financial crimes in Nigeria and the legal system's efforts to deter such offenses with substantial penalties [1][4].
