Convicted in 2022 homicide of a Deming teenager: a second male defendant
In a tragic turn of events, Rafael Camacho, a 22-year-old resident of Deming, has been convicted of first-degree murder, felony tampering with evidence, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, larceny involving a firearm, and conspiracy charges. The conviction is related to the 2022 killing of 14-year-old Ashton Remondini.
Ashton, a vibrant teenager, disappeared after going to shoot guns with friends in a remote area north of Deming. His family reported him missing the following day, after friends reported that he had sent a Snapchat video showing himself firing an AR-15 rifle and his girlfriend told the family he had been shot.
Michael Moody, who was 16 years old at the time, and Camacho, then 18, accompanied Ashton and were charged with shooting and stabbing the teen in a plot to kill him and steal his firearm. The 9mm handgun Moody used was later found in Camacho's house.
Shell casings from AR-15 and 9mm weapons, vehicle tracks, and shoe prints were found at the scene. Remindini's body was discovered two days later by Keeler Road near a state highway. It was subsequently determined that he died of stabbing and gunshot wounds.
Ashton was a beloved member of his community. He played soccer and football with local youth leagues, and his great love for his family and friends will be forever missed and remembered by those who knew him best, according to his family's statement. His obituary, published by his family, described him as a "tremendous light in our lives."
The obituary also mentioned Ashton's love for Motocross and BMX racing. He was a fan of these sports, and his passion for them was a significant part of his life.
The jury's verdict was reported by District Attorney Norman Wheeler's office. Camacho's conviction marks a step towards justice for Ashton and his family. The investigation into the case did not reveal the first person who was involved and convicted in the tragic events.
Ashton's loss has left a deep void in the lives of his family and friends. His memory, however, will continue to shine as a beacon of hope and resilience, inspiring those who knew him to carry on with strength and determination.
