Convicted Illinois resident faces 53-year prison term for committing a hate crime that resulted in the tragic death of a 6-year-old Palestinian-American child and the injury of his mother.

Rewritten Article:

Illinois landlord, 73-year-old Joseph Czuba, received a 53-year sentence for the racially motivated slaying of Palestinian-American boy, Wadee Alfayoumi, and his mother's attack, in October 2023. The tragic incident, which took place within their shared home in Plainfield, a suburb of Chicago, was instigated by Czuba's hatred towards Muslims.

Framed in a red jail uniform, Czuba appeared gaunt and frail at Will County Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak's courtroom, as he faced a likely life sentence for the first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and hate crimes he committed.

The jury found Czuba guilty in February, condemning him for the savage murder of Wadee, who met a gruesome end after being stabbed 26 times. The great uncle of the victim, Mahmoud Yousef, voiced his pain in court: "No matter what the sentence is going to be, it's not going to justify Wadee's death."

Turning towards Czuba, Yousef added, "He had no right to take them." The boy's mother, Hanan Shaheen, was also brutally wounded, with Czuba inflicting more than a dozen knife wounds upon her.

Czuba was handed a 30-year sentence for murdering Wadee, and a 20-year sentence for attacking the boy's mother. In addition, he received a 3-year term for a hate crime. These sentences are to be served consecutively.

Czuba remained silent at his own sentencing hearing. Apparently, he had no family members present to support him in court.

The victims had been renting rooms in Czuba's home when his prejudice towards Muslims escalated after October 7, 2023, following Hamas-led militant group attacks on Israel.

In court, the boy's mother testified that Czuba threatened both her and her son with anti-Islamic rhetoric. Prior to the attack, the victims and Czuba seemed to have a good rapport.

Before sentencing, the judge rejected the defense team's request to overturn the verdicts. The defense alleged that prosecutors had influenced the jurors' emotions by presenting arguments during the rebuttal portion of their case.

"This is America, and when I came right here, I came because this is a free country," Wadee's father, Odai Alfayoumi, said outside the courthouse. "So right now I'm confused. There is, like some people, they call my son, they call him as an angel. And they heard that a lot. Some people too, they call him as a devil Muslim. They make me confused. The same guy, he was looking at my son as an angel and right now, he calls him as a devil. So I don't know. This is America?"

Samira Puskar reported from Joliet, and David K. Li from Los Angeles County.
