Former Kazakh Minister's Sentence Increased for Attempted Bribery

In a significant development, the convicted former Minister of Culture of Kazakhstan, Arystanbek Mukhamediuly, has seen his sentence increased from eight to 11 years. The increase in Mukhamediuly's sentence comes after the discovery of attempted bribery.

The trial for Mukhamediuly, his wife Galia Iskakova, and his lawyer Mustakhim Tuleev is taking place at the city criminal court in Astana. The sentences for Iskakova and Tuleev were handed down at the same court.

Iskakova was sentenced to six months in prison with a lifelong ban on working in the civil service, while Tuleev was sentenced to 6 years and 8 months in prison, with a 10-year ban on returning to the bar.

However, the sentences for Iskakova and Tuleev do not affect the previous sentence of 8 years for Mukhamediuly. Both Iskakova and Tuleev have the right to appeal the verdict.

Tuleev reportedly alleged that he received a bribe of 27 million Tenge and $40,000 for a lighter sentence against Mukhamediuly. The trial for Tuleev involves charges of fraud.

Iskakova's sentences were related to bribery attempts, while Tuleev was convicted of fraud. The money given by Iskakova and Tuleev did not reach high-ranking recipients.

The charges against Mukhamediuly involve attempted bribery in a large amount. The trial for these individuals was covertly monitored as part of investigative actions.

In December 2022, Iskakova gave $140,000 to Tuleev as a bribe for a positive decision on a hotel. In April 2023, she handed over $100,000 to Tuleev for leniency towards her husband. In January 2023, she gave another $120,000 to Tuleev for a change in her husband's restraint measure. In June 2023, Tuleev enriched himself by another 27 million tenge and $40,000.

The trial for Iskakova and Tuleev is ongoing, and the outcome may yet impact the ongoing case against Mukhamediuly. The sentences for Iskakova and Tuleev do not affect Mukhamediuly's current sentence.
