Convicted ex-labor official receives sentence for corruption charges
In a significant development, a former Ministry of Labor official, Hsieh Yi-jung, has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison for a series of corruption and embezzlement charges. The case in question, known as the 'my case' or 'case status', has been making headlines in Taiwan.
Hsieh Yi-jung, the former director of the Workforce Development Agency northern branch, was accused of embezzling public funds and public property. The Control Yuan investigation found that she misused the Employment Stabilization Fund to purchase lavish gift boxes, valued at more than NT$20,000, which were later found to have been misappropriated.
In addition to these charges, Hsieh Yi-jung was also accused of favoritism in two procurement projects in 2023 and last year. She allegedly favored specific vendors in these projects.
Other defendants in the case were sentenced to prison terms ranging from five months to two years, with suspended sentences of two to four years. Notably, the former head of the Agency for Labor Development North of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, who was charged in March 2023 and again in May 2023, is not identified in the available search results; the date when the verdict was announced is also not provided.
The case, often referred to as 'my case' or 'case status', also involves allegations of workplace bullying, leading to the passage of an impeachment proposal by the Control Yuan. The proposal was passed for Hsieh Yi-jung and former agency director-general Tsai Meng-liang following allegations of embezzlement and the aforementioned case of workplace bullying linked to a civil servant's suicide. As a result, Hsieh Yi-jung has also been deprived of her civil rights for three years.
Interestingly, Hsieh Yi-jung was held incommunicado from December but was released on bail of NT$1 million (US$33,229) on April 8. The New Taipei City District Prosecutors' Office charged her with embezzlement and profiteering under the Anti-Corruption Act in April.
It's important to note that the ruling can be appealed, and the case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding integrity and accountability in public office.
