Convicted Delphi killer's spouse speaks out: "My husband's no monster"
Richard Allen, the husband of Kathy Allen, was found guilty on all charges in the double murder case that took place in Delphi, Indiana, in February 2017. The victims were Abby Williams, 13, and Libby German, 14, who were brutally murdered near the Monon High Bridge.
The conviction came in November 2024, with Allen receiving a 130-year prison sentence, the maximum penalty. He was found guilty of felony murder for killing both girls while attempting to commit kidnapping, and of knowingly killing both Abby and Libby.
The crucial evidence presented against Allen included a recording made by Libby, who had the presence of mind to pull out her phone and capture the suspect crossing a bridge near the crime scene. This video was considered "arguably the biggest piece of evidence" in the case by the prosecutor, Nicholas McLeland. Abby also hid the phone from the killer, enabling law enforcement to find it and use the recording in their investigation.
The prosecution also focused on multiple confessions Allen made in jail to his psychologist, corrections officers, and his wife. One of these confessions included Allen telling his wife, "I did it. I killed Abby and Libby."
Despite the conviction and sentencing, Allen continues to fight against his conviction. His wife has publicly expressed hope for an appeal and maintains her belief in his innocence, though the families of Abby and Libby remain deeply affected by the tragedy.
The case gained national attention, with the series "Capturing Their Killer: The Girls on the High Bridge" providing a deep dive into the case. The series features interviews from key players and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, including newly-released interrogation footage of Richard Allen.
A major clue in the case was a photo of the girls, taken by Libby, showing Abby on the Monon High Bridge, which was posted on Snapchat moments before the murders. Another significant piece of evidence was a misfiled statement, dated three days after the murders, listing a person named "Richard Allen Whiteman" as self-reporting being on the trails between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the day of the crime, and mentioning seeing three girls.
The volunteer file clerk discovered this misfiled statement, which was not with the other managed files. She changed the name to Richard Allen, as she believed the names were transposed and it was misfiled, as Allen lived on Whiteman Drive.
Forensic evidence also played a significant role in the case, with prosecutors arguing that police analysis determined that the unspent round found near the girls' bodies was cycled through Richard Allen's Sig Sauer Model P226.
The series is streaming in its entirety on Hulu from Tuesday, Aug. 5.
