Hydrography's role extends beyond navigation, as demonstrated by the transformation of Costa Rica's Lake Arenal via dam enlargement in 1979. The hydrological management and mapping of artificial lakes support renewable energy production, water supply, and ecological management.

Cook's practices influenced European naval charting, the Challenger and Meteor expeditions propelled global marine geology, the IHO fostered international standardization, and current digital and autonomous tools empower worldwide hydrographic efforts. These advancements are shaping the future of hydrography, with countries like the Netherlands, Portugal, Suriname, and many others anticipating the transition to autonomous systems, AI, and the S-100 standard.

As we look to the future, initiatives like the Nippon Foundation's GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project bring together global expertise to achieve the complete mapping of the world's oceans by 2030. This collective effort underscores the importance of collaboration and cooperation in hydrography, ensuring its continued role in supporting navigation, exploration, and sustainable development.
