Controversy surrounds opposition parliamentarian for his criticism of the armed forces

In a recent turn of events, political activist Srisuwan Janya has filed a petition with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) against Chon Buri MP, Mr. Sahassawat Kumkong. The petition stems from a controversial Facebook post by the MP, criticising the Thai military over the Thai-Cambodian border conflict.

The post, which has since been deleted, reportedly contained strong language against the military, labelling them as a “lying b*d”. This post was considered disrespectful amid the tense border clash, and Mr. Srisuwan believes it belittled the military during a time when the nation was morally supporting its role in defending national sovereignty.

Mr. Srisuwan has urged the NACC to launch an investigation into the matter, requesting the suspension of the MP from his duties and revocation of his right to contest elections for life. However, as of the reported dates (late July and early August 2025), there is no mention in the search results that Mr. Sahassawat Kumkong has been officially suspended or penalized by Parliament or any official body.

The apology for the controversial post comes after Mr. Sahassawat was warned by the People's Party leadership. According to the party's deputy leader, Mr. Rangsiman Rome, the apology was issued in response to the petition filed by Mr. Srisuwan with the NACC.

However, Mr. Rangsiman did not address the specific allegations of ethical misconduct made by Mr. Srisuwan. Instead, he reaffirmed the party's support for the military in defending national sovereignty, while also cautioning against using the Thai-Cambodian conflict as justification for a military coup.

The People's Party has not publicly stated whether they will support an investigation into the matter by the NACC. The party's stance remains consistent, supporting what is good and demanding reforms where they are needed.

Mr. Rangsiman stated that the party's stance never changes, supporting what is good and demanding reforms where they are needed. He also cautioned against using the Thai-Cambodian conflict as justification for a military coup.

This incident serves as a reminder of the high standards expected of political officeholders and the need for ethical conduct in public discourse, especially during times of national crisis. The investigation and its outcomes remain ongoing, with no concluded penalty or suspension detailed in the sources.
