Controversy Surrounding War 2: Cinematography Board Requesting Edits to Explicit Scenes Featuring Kiara Advani
War 2, the highly-anticipated action-packed film starring Hrithik Roshan, Junior NTR, and Kiara Advani, is set for release. The movie, directed by Ayan Mukerji, has been granted a U/A 16+ certificate by the Revising Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), not the Election Committee.
The CBFC has requested the makers of War 2 to make several edits to the film. One of the key changes is the removal of 9 seconds of Kiara Advani's sensual visuals from the song "Aavan Jaavan." The board deemed these scenes as too "sensual" and in violation of their guidelines on on-screen intimacy and revealing attire.
In addition to this, the CBFC requires the muting of "inappropriate references" found in six different audio-visual segments, the replacement of an "obscene" dialogue, and the deletion of a two-second "obscene gesture" performed by a character. These cuts aim to reduce the explicitness of sensual images by 50% and enforce present censorship standards.
The decision has sparked controversy, with many fans and critics questioning the logic behind censoring brief bikini visuals while violent scenes remain untouched. The edits have been described as arbitrary and reflective of outdated sensibilities, especially given the widespread availability of more explicit content on streaming platforms. Kiara Advani’s bikini scenes had generated significant social media buzz, marking a significant on-screen appearance for her, making the CBFC’s removal a topic of public debate.
Last year, Padma Shri Ramesh Patange, the Presiding Officer of the Revising Committee for War 2, cleared the controversial films Hamare Baraah and Vedaa, both of which had faced issues with the Election Committee. Patange is known for clearing films that have reservations from the Election Committee.
War 2 is one of the biggest releases of the year, featuring a mix of action, star power, and a gripping plot. Despite the censorship controversy, the film is expected to draw a large audience due to its star-studded cast and promising storyline.
