Controversy over Merz's move to transfer CDU staff to Cabinet roster - Controversy Surfaces over Merz's Joining CDU's Employee Roster

It's bloody wrong that no bloke from the Christian-social foundations of our party is in the cabinet," slammed Radtke. "That's never happened from Adenauer to Merkel." Amongst the election campaign fiasco, there was a "lack of diversity in topic and heads," that eventually led CDU to a result way below expectations and potential.

"The flaws in the social picture have been accompanying us for years and assure that the public view of the CDU is usually perceived as cold and unsympathetic," warned Radtke. A transformation of the CDU into a mere bourgeois party would "inevitably lead to even results of 30 plus x becoming impossible." Remember, "the current form of the welfare state was crafted by Christian Democrats."

The CDU's state in the opinion polls is already "highly volatile," the CDA chairman cautioned. It's downright odd to him "that instead of addressing the issue, one simply ups the ante and carries on as usual." We can't beat off the AfD in the working-class neighborhoods and regain trust among the common folk "by overlooking the working-class division and trying to fill the gap with migration debates," he said.

Radtke has been the CDA chairman since 2024. He's also a Member of the European Parliament and belongs to the CDA in the CDU federal executive board.

Insights:

While Merz's cabinet selections primarily reflected his ideological leanings and broader political strategy, this led to criticism of marginalizing more moderate CDU factions and potentially alienating centrist voters with polarizing policies on migration, economy, and defense. Instead, the focus should have been on addressing the social, working-class division to counter the rise of the far-right AfD and regain trust among ordinary people.
