In a recent turn of events, German football club 1. FC Cologne has announced its determination to exhaust all legal possibilities to realise the expansion of its training ground, the Geißbockheim. This decision comes following a ruling by the Federal Administrative Court on April 24, 2024, which validated the building plan for the expansion.
The club has been grappling with the expansion of its FC home in the Cologne green belt for over a decade, a struggle that has now escalated into a public protest. Hundreds of Cologne fans demonstrated outside the Cologne town hall on Wednesday, carrying banners reading "Das Herz des 1. FC Köln schlägt in Sülz" (The heart of 1. FC Cologne beats in Sülz).
FC president Werner Wolf has expressed a lack of faith in constructive cooperation with Cologne politics, stating that the latest obstacles placed in the way of the club's expansion are unfair. FC managing director Philipp Türoff echoed these sentiments, calling the situation a tactical foul and expressing shock over the turn of events.
Türoff also mentioned that the club expects a legal review by the Higher Administrative Court of Münster by the end of the year, as previously stated. The Nature Conservation associations in the Cologne city council have previously demanded that the Gleueler Wiese not be built on further, but the club's intention to oppose all party political and personal interests in the run-up to the local elections suggests a focus on moving forward with the expansion.
Despite the ongoing dispute, the club is looking forward to its summer schedule, including a planned training camp in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria, ahead of the 2025/2026 Bundesliga season. However, the heart of the matter remains the expansion of the Geißbockheim, a cause that the club and its supporters are committed to fighting for.
In light of the club's intent to challenge the restrictions on its expansion, 1.
