Controversy persists between Flamengo and Estudiantes in the Libertadores Cup: now Flamengo alleges that Conmebol has scrapped the expulsion of Gonzalo Plata

In a heated Copa Libertadores match against Estudiantes de La Plata on September 15, 2021, Flamengo faced numerous disputes with the refereeing team. The match was marked by inverted fouls, disproportionate yellow cards against Flamengo, and a penalty for intentional handball by a defender that was not awarded.

The refereeing team, composed of Colombian referee Andrés Rojas, assistants Alexander Guzmán Bonilla and John Alexander León Sánchez, and fourth referee Jhon Alexander Ospina Londoño, was under scrutiny for these inconsistencies.

One of the most contentious moments was the expulsion of Gonzalo Plata, which was not overturned by CONMEBOL. However, following an investigation, CONMEBOL acknowledged an error in Plata's expulsion. The audio of the VAR in the controversy was also released.

In response to the controversial refereeing, Flamengo released an explosive statement criticizing CONMEBOL. They expect immediate measures to be taken to partially repair the damage caused and preserve the legitimacy of the CONMEBOL Libertadores.

Flamengo will also appeal to CONMEBOL against the absurd expulsion of player Gonzalo Plata. The coach, Filipe Luís, criticized the refereeing team's conduct, stating that the referee wanted to be the protagonist of the match.

Meanwhile, Flamengo's focus shifts to the upcoming matches. Gonzalo Plata will be available for the return match against Estudiantes on September 25th at 21:30 hours.
