Controversy persists around compulsory military service

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has expressed his views on various topics related to volunteerism and the military in a series of recent statements.

In a notable development, Steinmeier suggests that less bureaucracy is needed for small associations to encourage more volunteers. He believes that this would make it easier for individuals to contribute to their communities and support various causes.

Steinmeier also considers the current measures to increase the attractiveness of the military service as insufficient. He emphasizes the need for further steps to attract more young people to military service, ensuring the strength and readiness of the German armed forces.

The President welcomes the government's plans to increase the volunteer allowance, acknowledging the essential role volunteers play in society. He further praises the voluntary commitment of millions of people, highlighting their significant contributions in various sectors, including the ARD.

Steinmeier has previously advocated for a social service period model, lasting six months to a year, which could be completed in the civilian sector. He believes that this would provide young people with valuable experiences and opportunities to contribute to their communities.

In addition, Steinmeier suggests that a service period could be fulfilled in social projects, THW, fire brigade, or the military. He emphasizes that without volunteers, Germany could be "colder," and the country would look different and less vibrant.

On a personal note, Steinmeier's wife, Elke Büdenbender, will be present with him today as he receives approximately 4,000 volunteers at Schloss Bellevue. An open day at the castle is scheduled for tomorrow, expected to attract up to 15,000 visitors over the two days.

Regarding the debate about reinstating conscription, Steinmeier finds it legitimate due to the changing security situation. However, he does not directly comment on the extension of the military service.

The federal cabinet has proposed a bill to introduce a new military service, focusing on voluntariness and a more attractive service. Steinmeier's stance on this matter remains to be seen.
