Racism Incidents Mar German Football Cup Matches

The German Football Association (DFB) has launched investigations into incidents of racist abuse that took place during the first round of the German Football Cup matches on August 17, 2025 [1]. These incidents have drawn strong condemnation from the football community, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who emphasized that "there is no place for racism in football" [2].

In the first-round cup match between Lok Leipzig and FC Schalke 04, the game was interrupted due to a racist insult from the stands. Schalke's guest player, Christopher Antwi-Adjei, reported that the "N-word" was shouted at him [3]. Meanwhile, in a separate cup match in Potsdam, a professional from 1. FC Kaiserslautern was insulted, and both fan groups chanted "Nazis out" [4]. Antwi-Adjei has since filed a complaint, and the police have begun investigations into the incident.

The Leipzig police registered a total of 17 criminal offenses during the game, including several assaults and property damage [5]. Thanks to swift intervention by spectators and security services, the perpetrator was identified in the Potsdam incident [6].

In response to such incidents, the DFB and the broader football community typically implement disciplinary measures ranging from fines and stadium bans to match suspensions, depending on the severity and evidence of the racist behavior [7]. The DFB is expected to take appropriate action against the perpetrators of the racism incidents, as stated by previous bullet points.

Anti-racism efforts in German football historically focus on education and inclusion, with possible enhancements following these recent events. The DFB has been committed to numerous initiatives against racism and discrimination in football and society for years [8]. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf has condemned racism incidents in cup matches in Leipzig and Potsdam, stating that racism and discrimination, hatred and exclusion have no place in football [9].

FIFA leadership has also expressed concern over the incidents, with Infantino now expecting clarification and punishment of the perpetrators from the DFB and the German police [10]. Neuendorf has emphasized the DFB's commitment to taking appropriate action, and it is expected that the German FA will reinforce existing programs and may introduce further measures as part of their response.

  1. The DFB, as part of their community policy and adhering to FIFA's stance, will likely formulate stringent disciplinary measures against the perpetrators of the racist incidents, considering the severity and evidence of the abuse, and these measures might involve fines, stadium bans, match suspensions, or even further measures to combat such incidents.
  2. In an attempt to strengthen their employment policy and uphold a zero-tolerance approach towards racism, the German Football Association (DFB) may consider reinforcing their existing programs against racism and discrimination and also implementing additional initiatives, following the recent incidents of racist abuse during the German Football Cup matches.
