Trump, during a meeting with Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) at the White House on Thursday, expressed his displeasure about Musk's scathing criticism. He left open the possibility of ending their cordial relationship, saying, "Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if that's still the case. I was surprised."
Trump felt that Musk, who was well-versed in the details of the law, "knew the background of the law better than almost anyone else here," so his sudden criticism came as a surprise to the US President.
Musk hit back by questioning Trump's consistency on the topic of government spending. In response to Trump's old tweets criticizing an increase in government expenditures, Musk asked, "Where is the man who wrote these words? Was he replaced by a doppelganger?"
Things took a turn for the worse when Trump condemned Musk's actions on his online platform, Truth Social. He called Musk "crazy" and demanded that he "get out." Trump also threatened to eliminate federal subsidies and contracts for Tesla, which could result in significant financial losses for the electric car manufacturer.
The controversial bill, known as the "big, beautiful bill," seeks to maintain the extant tax cuts from Trump's first term (2017-2021), but with the stipulation of deep cuts to healthcare programs such as Medicaid and reductions in food aid for the underprivileged, affecting up to 3.2 million low-income individuals.
Trump is putting pressure on the Senate to pass the bill before July 4th, despite reservations, even among Republican lawmakers. The 1116-page bill has already received approval in the House of Representatives.
On the stock market, the value of Tesla shares plummeted on Thursday, dropping by over 14% to $285.41 (249.51 euros). Tesla has lost over $100 billion in market capitalization due to this downturn.
