Controversial Discussion Highlights Cyclists and Electric Scooter Users
In the city of Hamm, the local police force recently undertook an operation aimed at enhancing cycling safety and enforcing traffic laws. The operation, which took place on September 11, sought to reduce accidents, promote adherence to traffic rules, and raise awareness among road users.
During the operation, officers stopped and penalised 54 traffic violations throughout the day. Many of those stopped were found to be using the sidewalk or their mobile phones while riding, behaviours that are strictly prohibited.
One notable incident involved a 41-year-old e-scooter rider from Hamm. Officers stopped the individual on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and discovered that the scooter had been tampered with, causing its operating permit to expire. Furthermore, the rider tested positive for marijuana use, leading to an administrative offense procedure. The 41-year-old now faces a significant fine.
For the safety of all road users, the police appeal to all two-wheeled vehicle users to adhere to traffic rules, not to ride on the sidewalk, and not to use a mobile phone while riding. In prevention talks with cyclists and pedelec riders, the particular dangers for two-wheeled vehicles were pointed out.
In addition to the operation, the police also took the opportunity to educate citizens about bicycle safety. Many citizens registered their bicycles in the local database and received tips on suitable locking methods to prevent theft.
