Contractor Facing Penalties: Took off without Completing Roof Work; Fined £25,000 and Given Two Suspended Sentences
In a recent court case, Mr Ul Haq, trading as Your Home Our Pride Building Services, has been ordered to pay compensation totaling £25,000 to two victims in Ashton, Manchester, following an investigation by Tameside Council's Trading Standards officers and Building Control team.
The investigation was initiated after complaints by the victims to the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline in July 2021. Ul Haq was contracted to carry out a loft conversion and a basement conversion at two properties in Ashton, but failed to finish the work he was paid for, leaving both homes in a poor state. One of the properties became uninhabitable, forcing the homeowner and their family to move out.
Ul Haq was fined £25,000 and received two suspended prison sentences of eight months each. He was ordered to pay £13,510 to one victim and £9,250 to the other within 28 days, with a further £750 each month for the next two years, totalling £25,000. The remaining £2,240 of the compensation will cover prosecution costs.
The Judge stated that Ul Haq's actions had caused significant financial and emotional harm to the victims and their families. However, due to Ul Haq showing remorse, a desire to compensate the victims, and his role as a carer for his mother and wife, the sentences were suspended.
Cllr Vincent Ricci, Tameside Council Assistant Executive Member, commented, "Our trading standards team aim to protect consumers and support legitimate businesses by ensuring businesses trade fairly, safely, and legally. This case serves as a warning about the dangers of cowboy builders to homeowners and renovators."
The case highlights the importance of choosing a reputable builder and ensuring that all work is carried out to a high standard. Homeowners are advised to check the builder's credentials, get multiple quotes, and make sure that all work is guaranteed before any work begins.
Despite the court case, the owners of the other property have so far been unable to have work on their basement conversion completed. The article does not provide specific details about the extent of the damage caused by Ul Haq's poor workmanship or any specific timeline for when the work was originally supposed to be completed.
The court case did not provide details about the builder quotes that were taken before the work began. It is important for homeowners to ensure that they are getting value for money and that the quotes they receive are fair and competitive.
This case serves as a reminder to always do your research and take precautions when hiring a builder to ensure a smooth and successful renovation project.
