Vietnam's Athletics Aiming for Global Podiums

Hà Nội – With the reelection of President Hoàng Vệ Dũng, the Vietnam Athletics Federation (VAF) is gearing up for a breakthrough period. The new leadership, voted in during the eighth congress on April 25, has big ambitions for the national athletics scene.

Dũng, who will serve as president for the 2025-2029 term, and his Executive Committee have promised to propel Vietnamese athletics to greater heights after their re-election. Joining him will be three deputies – Nguyễn Trung Hinh, Nguyễn Đại Dương, and Phạm Thế Triều, with Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng assuming the role of General Secretary. In total, the Executive Committee includes 19 members, four fewer than the previous term.

Dũng acknowledged that the 2019-24 term had been a period of stable development for Vietnamese athletics, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted the accomplishments of Vietnamese athletes in major international events like the SEA Games, Asian Games, Youth Games, and Asian Championships, as well as their participation in the Olympics, world championships, and Grand Prixs.

Vietnam's athletes made a significant impact in the ASEAN arena, securing gold at the 2019 and 2021 SEA Games and finishing second in the 2023 SEA Games. At the Asian level, competitors bagged one gold and two silvers, while setting more than 20 national records. Remarkable athletes such as long jumper Bùi Thị Thu Thȁo, runners Nguyễn Thị Huyền, Lê Tú Chinh, and Nguyễn Thị Oanh, and their coaches, were also recognized for their outstanding performance.

However, the sport is not without its challenges. Obstacles include poor facilities, a lack of high-quality coaches, and skill level gaps between Vietnam and the Asian and world-level competitors.

Determined to guide Vietnamese athletes into a transformative phase, Dũng believes that the next step is to channel resources into developing young talent and helping aspiring athletes meet regional and international standards. With a focus on annual training courses, science-backed training methods, and global collaborations, the VAF is looking ahead to strong performances at upcoming competitions like the 2028 Olympics, the 2026 Asian Games, and the 33rd SEA Games in 2023, followed by the next editions in 2025 and 2029.

According to General Secretary Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, the ultimate goal is a gold medal at the Asian Games. The Federation hopes to see a Vietnamese athlete on top of the podium in the Games by 2030 and bringing home two titles in the 2034 editions. In addition, the VAF will continue to promote physical fitness among the populace and enhance the image of Vietnamese athletics internationally.
