Marc Cucurella, the Spanish defender, was met with a chorus of boos and jeers from disgruntled German fans upon his comeback to the Stuttgart football stadium – the same venue where his controversial handball in the Euro 2024 quarter-final went unpunished nearly a year ago.

During Spain's Nations League semi-final against France in Stuttgart, Cucurella faced a barrage of hostility, with fans booing him at every oppurtunity. Even before the match commenced, fans showed their displeasure during the team presentation and warm-up, zeroing in on Cucurella as the main focus of attention.

The source of the animosity was the infamous handball incident during the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Germany, in which Cucurella, although not intentionally, blocked a shot from Jamal Musiala with his arm in the penalty area. The referee, Anthony Taylor from England, missed the penalty call, which many witnesses considered a crucial blunder that unduly favored Spain in the match[1][2][4].

"I'm ready for the whistles," Cucurella said before the match, attributing it as just part of the game. "I haven't done anything wrong," he reinforced, seemingly prepared to endure the wrath of the crowd.

Yet, the memory of the controversial handball still lingered, with Cucurella admitting that he had fond memories of the stadium and the country. "We managed to win the title eventually," he said, downplaying the significance of the incident.

The UEFA later acknowledged the mistake and apologized for the missed penalty call[3]. Nonetheless, the controversy continues to cast a long shadow over Cucurella, both on and off the field.
