Towards the end of a trial in Shymkent, a judge openly displayed disdain towards a journalist by sticking out his tongue.

In a surprising turn of events, Judge Abinur Karabayev is currently under investigation for unprofessional behaviour. The incident took place during a trial in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, specifically the hearing of the armed attack case against Deputy Akim Ruslan Berdenov.

The incident was caught on video, recorded by capital journalist Botagoz Omaraova, and later shared on social media. The footage shows Judge Karabayev sticking out his tongue during the hearing, a behaviour that Omaraova found unexpected and unprecedented in her journalistic career.

The Shymkent court press service has confirmed the incident, but has not disclosed the expected timeline for the completion of the investigation. The department has emphasised that judges must adhere to professional ethics norms, maintaining the public's trust in the judicial system, regardless of the circumstances.

The investigation was launched by the Specialized Interdistrict Criminal Court of Shymkent. If it confirms a violation of the Code of Judicial Ethics, the case will be forwarded to the Commission on Judicial Ethics and then to the Judicial Jury under the Supreme Judicial Council for further action.

As of the latest information, no public statement or comment has been made by Judge Karabayev himself, and the outcome of the investigation is still pending. The department has reiterated that judges must maintain their composure and professionalism at all times, especially during sensitive trials such as this one.

This incident has sparked a wider discussion about the importance of maintaining professionalism and upholding the integrity of the judicial system. It serves as a reminder that judges, like all public figures, are held to a higher standard of behaviour and are expected to conduct themselves with dignity and respect.
